The Pretrial Fairness Act (PFA), which went into effect in Illinois on September 18, 2023, abolishes cash bail and imposes strict new limits on the use of pretrial jail detention for people accused of crimes. As part of our evaluation of the PFA, we’re collecting Chicago reported incident data.

We developed a data tool that tracks the weekly reported crime data, starting from 01-01-2018. Data is scraped from the Chicago Data Portal daily and reflects all crimes reported to the Chicago Police. We’ve built several visualizations to track this data by incident category. We calculate weekly percentage change and difference in count compared to a 3 year average of the same week. This is calculated for the most recent complete week.
